Fascinating post over on Wikipedia on the topic of Liquorice, for ex, did you know that well over 75% of all liquorice is used by the tobacco industry to make their product taste better:

“Liquorice provides tobacco products with a natural sweetness and a distinctive flavor that blends readily with the natural and imitation flavoring components employed in the tobacco industry, represses harshness, and is not detectable as liquorice by the consumer.[15]


“As it inhibits Helicobacter pylori, it is used as an aid for healing stomach and duodenal ulcers, and in moderate amounts may soothe an upset stomach. Liquorice can be used to treat ileitis, leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease as it is antispasmodic in the bowels.”

But it’s good for the gut.  Still, when your mother tells you to stop eating all that liquorice, you better listen:

“Excessive consumption of liquorice or liquorice candy is known to be toxic to the liver[35] and cardiovascular system, and may produce hypertension[36] (acquired pseudohyperaldosteronism) and edema.[37]”


So don’t pig out on liquorice, or you’ll end up like this.

My final and favorite piece of advice is this:

“Comparative studies of pregnant women suggest that excessive amounts of liquorice (100g a week) may also adversely affect both IQ and behaviour traits of offspring.[42]”
