Culpability

“To the extent that the federal government didn’t fully do its job right, I take responsibility.” – George W. Bush

Am I the only one who finds this statement lacking? The news media seems to be falling over itself to present this “admission” of partial failure as some sort of watershed event in the evolution of Preznit Bush’s sense of responsibility. “A stark change of policy,” it is called. So it’s come to this. The guy finally admits that mistakes were made, for the first time in his presidency, and he is praised to the hilt. Reminds me of a weak parent pumping a youngster full of self esteem for finally doing the right thing, instead of behaving like a spoiled brat as usual.

Also, the very body language of Bush betrays him. He squirms, he twists his mouth, he looks away, he does everything he can to negate the “admission” of failure. Why can’t he look us in the eye and say it? He lacks.
